Hey guys, I just got a cornie keg and I was wondering about using the keg (or kegs once I buy another one) for secondary fermentation. Do they work good for that? Do you need some kind of airlock for that? Sorry I'm new to the whole kegging thing but I'm really excited.

I do all my secondary's in a corny, it's called kegging.:D Primary two to three weeks, transfer, carbonate and age as necessary.

I use them exclusively when I need a secondary. The nice thing is when you want to transfer it to a serving keg you can push it with CO2 and minimize oxidation. I also think they are easier to clean than a carboy but that's subjective.

So after the 2 weeks in primary, transferto the cornie and store at the proper temperature for the style of beer, then carbonate? Or carbonate right after the weeks in primary and age?

It doesn't really matter. You can seal and purge it with a couple blast's of 30psi co2 and let it age, or set it and forget it carb, and let it age.

all of the above is the standard or you can just let it sit out for a week or two and vent twice a day via your blow-off valve then chill and let it sit on gas for a week or drop your pressure to 3-5 PSI get some keg tubing and two black ball-lock quick disconnects and make a transfer tube and "push" to another clean keg and do the above either way the easy answer is yes use kegs as secondary its fun all the cool kids are doing it
