Just ate my first authentic Limburger and Onion sandwich

It sounds like a culinary nightmare doesn't it? Be sure to use a good stout dark rye bread if you do this.

What are my impressions? Well, all I can say is that you have to trust those Germans. They know what can make a great sandwich. I loved it. It was good.

BTW, I'm not under the influence in the least. I know how that can skew culinary perceptions. This isn't a case of that at all. I read about it, and I wanted to try this odd and strange sounding sandwich. I did, and it's good.

Nice. I'm always up for expanding my culinary horizons and good for you for trying something new. I'll have to try that someday if I get the chance. I don't believe I've ever had Limburger, though, so I really would have no idea what to expect.
 
That was always my Grandpa's sandwich of choice. I don't see Limburger around in stores much, but I'll try one one of these days.
 
Limburger is not was strong as people think. Sure it is strong, but I've smelt and eaten cheeses that are much stronger. It is pretty decent stuff.

OP, now you need to have a sardine (mustard sauce) and onion sandwich, and wash it down with a German smoked beer. In my top 5 of beer and food combos

And then win a fight against a grizzly bear using only your stomach as a weapon. That meal would build the necessary intestinal fortitude.
 
Love me a braunschweiger, cheese and mustard sandwich.
Unfortunately my guts turn sideways after them.

Braunschweiger, Limburger, onion, and sharp mustard on whole grain pumpernickel. With a sour beer of any sort. :rockin:

Better open a window afterwards as your farts afterward will blow the door off your house and snuff your pet cat.

This actually sound kind of like something I would make, and enjoy. Minus the sour beer. I tried my first lambic a few weeks ago and I don't think it's something that I enjoy. However, I would happily drink one of my pitch black English stouts with that sandwich! :mug:

OK, but don't give up on sours. Keep trying some. Check out the BJCP commercial examples. They are pretty variable and some are truly amazing. Fond Tradition makes a nice geuze (blended lambic). Rodenbach Grand Cru is a great Flanders Red. Sours really spurred me into brewing; someday I hope to make a magnificent sour.

EDIT: FYI - Guinness stout (at least the version that they serve in the UK) is partially soured. A portion of a previous batch is deliberately soured, then boiled, and returned to the ferment. There is a particular tang that you get that isn't as apparent in export versions.
 
Oh my. Gotta love the stinky cheeses. That and the sardine version sound delicious. I am going to have to go visit the German grocery near my house and see what kinds of cheeses they have on offer with their amazing deli meats.

Brings back memories of Saturday lunch sandwiches with my Dad. I haven't had Limburger Cheese in over 35 years. Now I got to go find some.
 
You know, I've been curious about Limburger cheese ever since I was a kid, watching cartoon characters pass out from smelling Limburger cheese. Still haven't gotten around to tasting (or smelling) it yet. I'm going to have to do so one of these days, maybe this weekend; maybe. Thanks for the memory jog.

When you try it do not let the smell dissuade you. It is intensely flavored yes, but good. Might take a little getting used to like blue cheese is for some.
 
Just tried my first Limburger today. Great tasting stuff!!

How do you recommenced storing it? For now its in a zip lock bag in the refrigerator. thinking about wrapping it in aluminum foil like its original package.
