Vodka martinis are sacrilege. Martinis are supposed to have flavor, not taste like rubbing alcohol. Just enough vermouth to barely taste it. The Gin is the star of the show.
Put a little vermouth in a martini glass. Swirl it around to coat the glass, and dump out the excess. Add 2oz chilled (but not stupid cold) gin, and garnish with an olive and lemon peel.
I've also recently discovered a love for Hendricks gin, which is an unusually piney-tasting gin. I like it chilled, straight up with a few cucumber slices floating in it, no vermouth. Not really a martini anymore but damn tasty. Add tonic for a new-and-improved G&T.
