I went to J Wakefield on a whim this weekend while in Miami for a wedding - was amused because of the long history of him getting trashed on this site but expected the beer to be very tasty. The beer was not really very good. The oreo stout was okay - better than the Veil one - but basically all of the other regular release stuff was completely unremarkable to bad, and the one BA beer I had (some stout - I have already forgotten the name) was hot and not very good.

Is it right of me to be completely tired of breweries where the response to this is "OH BUT TRY X LIMITED RELEASE"? Cool, this dude can make decent home-brew size batches of super cool beers, but the rest of these beers are not worth my time..

I didn't make it through much of the taplist when I was down there because DFPF was flowing, but the hef my girlfriend ordered was pretty tasty. I usually can't stand hefs. I've had 2 or 3 of his IPAs that were damn good.

I love reviews like this where someone goes in with a clear head thinking the beers will be good and comes away thinking that the beer was basically garbage. My biased take on JWB ruins any sort of this neutrality. Thank you!

Yeah totally agree, I went one time and the flagships were all pretty meh. Most of the berliners I've had are pretty tasty but that's only because they're overloaded with fruit and/or spice, the base berliner (Stush) smells like dirty socks and sulfur.

I had this one on Friday and it was a chore to finish that tasting glass, by far the sweetest beer I remember tasting.

Yeah the berliner in particular totally surprised me. After all the talk about berliners, I was expecting that to be really good. I LOVE berliners, so I was really disappointed by it being less than exciting. Unfruited berliners are honestly my favorite - anyone can load it up with 10 pounds of fruit and make it taste good..

Yeah, I feel the same way a lot of the time. I catch myself in a rut sometimes where I'm basically only drinking beer from like half a dozen or a dozen breweries that I know and love. I realize I'm not exploring enough, which I also like to do, typically only to try a bunch of new breweries and beer, get disappointed/let down, and then return to the half dozen or dozen breweries that I know and love. I go through this cycle every few months and sometimes have some really solid new beers from breweries I don't often try, but by and large I'm disappointed and questioning why I spent the effort and money when I know I can be happy drinking my regulars.

Man, I feel old.

I don't even know if new/breweries i'm already comfortable with is my problem. It's more trying to figure out why the **** J Wakefield and their ilk are brewing **** like bad amber ales that I don't want to drink when they made their whole name on X specialty beer. Gimmick breweries suck.

The breweries I like the most (established or not) are the ones from which I can order basically any beer I see on the tap list and at least be interested/challenged. Hill Farmstead obviously being the best example, but Oxbow, Counter Weight, hell, maybe even Night Shift at this point despite teh amount of crap I've given them in the past - either it's interesting or good. The **** at J Wakefield was, generally, neither. Yes, not everyone can make every style well, but if that's true, don't make the styles you can't make well.

Of course, knowing what I have read about the guy, he probably thinks his amber ale is the best amber ale ever made.

Good points. We have basically the same list of go-to breweries. I've always described it as not wanting to wade through a bunch of **** in order to find the gems when there are enough breweries out there (at least where I live) that consistently produce very good/interesting beers across a range of styles. I'd rather support them and try new beers that have a higher likelihood of being clean and interesting, even if it's not the best of that given style.

He invented that style. The correct term is Floridamber Ale.

I'll be drinking a bunch of "whales" from JWB this weekend with friends, and I already feel dirty about it. At least the money the event derives is going to a great charity which cancels out some of the bad feelings I have about consuming said beers.

Right?
All proceeds go to The Human Fund.
