I bought some pin lock kegs off ebay. I took apart the posts and the gas side post on both kegs have tiny tubes. Is this normal? All of the ones I've seen are like an inch long...

Tiny tubes are fine, I usually cut mine short anyway. I never understood why the tube stuck down inside anyway.

A few weeks back i was looking at the little inch long gas tubes and I came to the conclusion that their only purpose is to assist in keeping the keg airtight. The poppet presses on the top of the tube, which in turn presses on that oring, keeping everything tight.

So I won't have to buy those other tubes that stick down further? Just get a new O-ring?

One more thing, how in the hell do you get the poppets out of the keg posts to clean it?

just get new o rings. When you get the post off take something pointy and poke it into the top of the post. The poppet will fall right out so make sure you are doing it over a table or something.

I've been poking it but it just stays in. I soaked them in hot water and oxyclean for a while and tried again but still no dice...

They can get stuck pretty tight. With those really stuck ones I use a small screwdriver and knock on it until the poppet pops out.

Are there any types of posts that have poppets which stay in permanently? I recently bought some kegs and as much as I try, the poppets won't come out. It seems that they are meant to stay in there for good.

With a little more prodding, I was able to get the poppets out. I had to take a small diameter screw driver and push the poppet through from the outside.
