While I was cleaning my equipment yesterday, I decided to remove the temperature probe that I had taped to my bucket. I haven't been able to use the probe recently and the cord was just getting in the way. I thought I had it layered well enough, but, after pulling off the tape, I noticed these black spots on the bucket and on what I had been using as insulation. After noticing it, I put the bucket in a large tub of OxiClean to see if it could be removed. I was using black Gorilla Tape, but it's not residue from the tape. I'm thinking I may just throw it away to be safe. Is this something I should be worried about?

Hard to tell if it is mold or not, but I wouldn't throw it away even if it was. Clean the area with something like a paste of Barkeepers Friend, to avoid scratches.

I've even cleaned stuff like that off the outside with a towel moistened with Starsan. As long as it's on the outside, it's not too much to worry about that it should be tossed.

It's certainly nice to hear that my fears are unfounded. I guess my concern comes from not knowing much about mold. My main concern was that there could be problems just having it in the house, but it seems that is not the case. Will it not cause issues with anything it may touch? Thanks for the quick replies.

As long as you clean the temp probe, bucket, etc, it shouldn't be a problem. I think it came from condensation inside whatever you covered the probe with.
