Checking in on my first Del Rey courtesy of shelf_turd_ferguson.

This nose on this one is insane, the floral sweet honey and musky, funky tart fruit smell is followed by faint spicy pepper.

Flavor is green apple, caramel, earth, honey, a bit of peppercorn tingle closed with a bit of citrus peel-like tartness. Classic Fantome yeast and Jester King flora work well to add a bit of sour twang and complexity to the sweetness of some Fantome offerings. Not getting any real slickness. The Abv is incredibly well hidden.

Would smash again 100%

Was Fantome yeast used in the JK version? I thought they each used their own culture.

Jester Kings "own culture" has roots in fantome dregs.

We just used our mixed culture, which by the way, contains Fantome dregs among many other things. But those dregs were added about three years ago and we've obviously made many beers since then without ever having any ropiness.

I just picked up some bonus acidity, really brightened the flavors. I attribute that to the souring texas hill bugs, not the more funky earthy Fantome goobers. This for sure tasted like a collaboration in the best way possible, both breweries brought amazing characteristics to the beer.

There's also 3F dregs in their house strain, years ago in the maturity. Jeff S showed me a keg of dregs from 3F at the first atrial release. Wanted to steal.

I plan to bring a Fantome bottle to a share this Friday.

The share is mostly lambic (seasons, a&t, vintage bottles) and I'm bringing a Herfst to reserve my place, but wanted to mix it up with my second bottle. The rest of the guys have never had Fantome at its finest. I thought I'd ask if you had opinions on which Fantome bottle should I bring, and why? Choices include:

(a) 2005 Automne
(b) 2008 Strange Ghost
(c) 2010 Saison (red date lettering)
(d) 2008 Dalmatienne Dark or Light
(e) 2011 Clos Preal (unknown batch, missing foil)
(f) something else I don't have, but maybe you want to express ship it to me

By red date lettering....it doesnt happen to have the words "sur lie" also in red text on the front label, does it? If it does, im highly ISO for sentimental reasons.

Side note: bringing a Fantome to a lambic tasting never ends well....

Drink them all except option (b) I want that one please.

Set a new personal record for myself. I went an entire month (well, 30 days) without drinking a tome. To be fair, I havent been drinking much beer-wise the past several months but the tomes have been continuing to appear at my doorstep care of some trades I set up weeks/months ago. Im pretty excited to be soon drinking some freshies: new batch tous d'iapes, chocolate, surlie and grimm.

Im gonna be "that guy" this weekend who gets tome drunk and plays in a charity softball tournament. Then on Sunday I depart for Virginia for a week of toming on the beach. Anyone know the Virginia tome scene? Do I need to BYOT or can they be found in shops in/around VA beach?

I will check on the lettering. I believe it's just the date (I have the all-black ones and a red-letter date one, but will have to check on the Sur Lie lettering). What's the sentimental value?

And...why don't Fantomes at lambic shares end well? Now I'm curious...

The only tomes I've found in VA over the last couple years was Noel, which sat on shelves. Pretty much a no mans land, sadly.

The sentimental reason is because that was one of the last bottlings I bought off the shelf prior to the great Pennsylvania tome dought of 2010. When I bought that bottling, Strange Ghost was also a shelfy and since that time, PA has never seen more than Noel/Classic/Printemps/Hiver/Pissenlit.

It usually goes 1 of 2 ways with lambicologists.
A.) They dont "get" the ghost and complain its not wild/sour enough for their taste.
B.) They do "get" the ghosty and become lifers enthralled in the adventures of digging up lost/forgotten bottles and trading/buying the **** out of every bottle they see.

Your mileage may vary.

Funny, both of those are equally annoying to current Tome fanboys.
