So Competicity and I opened a couple of really awesome saisons last week, three of which were awesome danyP creations!

First was a Blanche that I suspect to be circa 2010, but could be wrong. It took a little bit for this one to open up, but it blossomed into a citrus and meyer lemon beauty. Funk, lightly tart, and a bit dirty. I thought this one was in a great place and very complicated once it opened up. Outstanding.

Up next was the Saint Roch. Unknown vintage, but the best before was notched as March 2012. It was sans cork. I got a lot of apple juice from this once poured. After it opened up a bit, it became more juicy, with a sort of faded herbs, lightly tart, earthy, and musty. All things I enjoy.

Lastly, was the Ete. I'm not sure on the vintage, but I suspect it was 2014. This was surprising - dark and malty, and it reminded me of a lighter Hiver. Herbal with some apple and some Fantome character that becomes a bit tart. I found it a bit cloying.

Overall, these beers were awesome, and it was a real joy to share the experience!

Sur lie might be the best beer I can currently grab off the shelf, period. It's perfect.

This is delicious. Never had it fresh but since it's about a year old it's really nice...typically with "cascadian dark ale" on the label most people would think black ipa off the bat but flavor wise this is on the opposite side of the spectrum. Reminds me of a belgian strong ale...really nice bitter dark chocolate taste that lingers with a slightly hoppy and funky finish. Awesome stuff.

Yeah i hope my little review doesn't make you unhappy for revisiting a bottle. I do have pretty weird taste when it comes to tomes, but I can definitely see this bottle being pretty off putting out the gate.

I don't think Strange Ghost has landed anywhere yet. October Brise BonBons was very much like most of the current batches. Young clean yeast character, herbal/bitter. I liked it but it was fairly middle of the pack as far as tomes go.

Backlog from the week after Thanksgiving. Rad share with with the ever fun and generous chaps PerHops and jedwards:


Flop was a passionfruit musky bubblegum extravaganza. Fair amount of cardboard.
The 1998 Ete had a big lemon element, some lacto tartness and classic 'Tome apricot / strawberry.
2003 Sur Lie was like straight strawberry juice. Amazing. Some damp soil and a slight buttery flavor, not off putting, and herbaciousness. Mostly just strawberries for days.
2008 Monks Cafe Gueuze (dry hopped) was classic Cantillon, amped up in every way -- funk, lemon, bitter, beautiful. Dunno how that non-Tome made it into this share... but I'm grateful, jedwards
Automne 2005 was the fav of the night for me. Cloudy orange juice, tart, funky bitter orange peel and lemon. Some tannins balanced balanced the little bit of oxidized maltiness. White vinegar. Green apple. And some of that orange Creamsicle flavor you get in Ete from that era. Awesome stuff all around.
