Times have changed. People have embraced the cat piss.
I'm all for progression and understand vernacular is ever flowing and changing, but if someone describes a beer as cat piss, I doubt I'm in a hurry to try it.

I mean I will, but i just won't be in a hurry.

Thus reminds me of going to a cigar tasting and hearing people describe some as barn yard. You mean like horse poo? Oh yummy!! Some one grab me a cat piss beer to go with my horse turd smoke!!

And I understand dank as a descriptor as I do partake and hops are a close relative to Marijuana. But juicy, I don't get it.

I guess that reminds me of one of my favorite kinds of beers: Brett beers and any wild ales containing Brettanomyces. But I just could never get over how people described it as tasting like "wet horse blanket" or "horse sweat" or a bunch of other vomit-inducing descriptors that would make me want to stay as far away from them as possible. I love Brett beers, whether they just have a little Brett in them or are 100% Brett, but the descriptors people give for them are awful. And I can honestly say that I don't know what horse sweat or a wet horse blanket tastes like, but if it tastes as awesome as a wild ale with Brett, then... well... I don't know what to tell you. Why aren't people using horse sweat and horse blankets for cuisine?

“Dank” and “juicy” are 2 of the most over used words whenever anybody talks about hops, and personally I can’t stand either word. Dank to me means pot or cannabis. I’m not a pothead and I don’t want that in my beer. If you want juicy go buy some juicy juice and drink it out of the little box through your little plastic straw.

Seriously, there are so many new hops that so many of us have never tried. The word descriptions don’t help. Its time we found some new words.
Proposed new words to use as adjectives for hop character:
astringent
coniferous
turpentiney
dispensary-like
chronic
hippie whistle
rasatafarian
hemp
pungent
acrid
beauty parlor
paper mill
asparagus wizz
backseat of the Phish tour bus
Colorado Skate Park

I would say add on ammonia in place of cat piss.

Love the descriptions above good work @Snuffy

Funny enough I do like the ammonia flavor when eating dutch drop... In small amounts.

A "From-High-Above-as-a-Primarily-Wine-Guy" soap box moment....
- just cuz someone says "horse sweat" or "barnyard" or "cannabis" or "cat piss" or "dank" or "what-ever-the-frigggg" DOES NOT mean that is all that is being offered in aroma or palate. It's just a distinguishable element. DON'T over-react.
- yes, some people are more sensitive to certain aromas than others [cat-pee, petrol, mercaptan], and others more sensitive to taste characteristics [bitter, umami, acidity, tannin]
- when you can smell/taste a beverage & you can de-cipher different aromas & flavor characteristics, use that as your baseline of what brings joy, & what does not but is ok, and what brings you disappointment.

Not everything is 100% terrible or 100% awesome.

I sometimes read tasting notes for a whiskey that mentions "leather" and "tobacco." I don't want to drink something that smells or tastes like the Marlboro Man's saddle.

I know they're trying to be esoteric, but some of these comparisons are just silly.
With all due respect,
if you spend the time to actually evaluate these tastings with an open mind, you might recognize these traits as well.
"leather" and "tobacco" are characteristics universally associated with oak barrel aging. Whether it's spirits or wine or whatever.
Don't dismiss something cuz it didn't come from you.

I am sooooo sorry...
I didn't recognize when you were being intelligent, or just intrinsically ignorant....
My bad.

[I hope I didn't ruin you're funny post -- Francis]

back on topic a little bit. i think a am referring to dank . i like it . but it can be overpowering like any other flavor in a beer. i also call it pungeant. or have in the past. it does NOT smell like marijuana to me. marijuana smells liek a skunk to me. i have asked others to smell my hops (😱) and sometimes i do get that weed like responce.

balancing hops in highly hopped ales is the hardest part of brewing for me i think.

once i get to 3 different hops i have problems with not drowning out 2 of the 3.

if i had to guess i would say its the galaxy that was overpowering.

i made a similar citra/mosaic/strata ale and it also had a little bit too much cat.

to each his own i guess.

I love dank, CTZ and mosaic are fantastic skunky hops. Galaxy has always been a little off for me though, like over ripe/rotten papaya.

Cat piss is different for me, completely a turn off and nothing like dank hops. It's off putting and disgusting for me.
