Is 5 oz. too much primer?

Hey all. I have a home brew kit that came with Front Porch Pale Ale. They supply 5oz. of priming sugar, but I read that a lot of kit's provide too much priming sugar and cause gushers. I also read that 4oz is good for a 5 gallon batch. Does 1 oz make a big difference? I'll probably just use the 5oz but was just curious.

Bottling a 5 gallon kit leaves about 4.5 gallons actually packaged. At "typical" ale temp of 68F, 5 oz of corn sugar provides about 2.75 volumes of CO2 in 4.5 gallons. That's too carbonated for most ales, but it shouldn't be enough to cause gushers. If you're getting gushers, there's something else going on.

4 oz of corn sugar is more like 2.4 volumes, which is a more appropriate level for the average American style beer.

It's still in primary so i havent bottled yet. So 4oz would be better yeah? I might just try that. The instructions havent been all that accurate up to this point so i don't mind doing my own thing.

Yes, 5 oz is too much for 5 gallons. Go with just 4 oz. You'll be glad you did.
