Irish Moss?

I brewed my second batch a couple days ago, and it included irish moss. I noticed Irish moss is called a clarifier. How exactly does it work? Does it add any flavor to the beer? Also, during the most rigorous part of fermentation, there were a lot of clumps criculating through the beer, something that wasn't present in my first batch. Is that due to the irish moss?

There's a lengthy discussion in this thread. Ignore the part about adding it at bottling and read further for the how's and why's. Carrageenan is the primary active ingredient.

The clumps are probably just yeast - sometimes it does that.
