OK, I posted before on this hopped LME I have. I'm going to brew it using some LME too but I want to add some hops to try to "better" it a little.

Any suggestions on whole or pellets?

When do I add them? 60 minutes and 15 minutes seem to be what I've read.

Do I put them in directly or in a bag?

Thanks.

Since it's almost impossible to know the real HBU's of your hopped LME, I'd say use the hops schedule, as is, for whatever recipe you want to use and you'll be fine. I used a hopped can of extract once, and you'd hardly know it.
As far as whole or pellet, bag or not, if you ask 20 people you'll get 20 different answers; it's mostly a matter of preference.

OK the hopped LME. What is it supposed to produce in terms of quantity, style or IBU. If the IBUs are enough from the LME (unlikely for an IPA) then you just want to use the hops for late additions at 15min, 5min and/or flame out. This won't add much bitterness but will add flavor and aroma. If you need some bitterness add some hops at the beginning of the boil. You can use a calculator like the one on tastybrew.com or beertools.com to determine the IBUs your hop additions will provide.
As for pellets/whole, free/bag. All three work and are used by various brewers. pellets are easier to handle and store but flowers are easier to filter. A bag will likely reduce hop utilization by makes filtering out hops easy.

I'd use pellet hops. I think they're easier to use. Filtering is really unneccessary, as it will all fall to the bottom of the fermenter and you'll siphon off the top of it when you bottle or rack to secondary. Besides, the hops going into your fermenter might even continue to flavor your beer. If you filter them out (pain in the a$$, IMO), then you won't get that.

Never used hopped LME, so don't know how much to use. I think you'd be safe using 2 oz. of any hop, though.

I'd agree on just using a 5 minute add. To keep life simple, use whole leaf and bag them. An ounce of Cascades will make it Left Coast, use Fuggles or East Kent Goldings for a more English version.

Thanks. I grabbed an ounce each of pellets yesterday... Cascade and Willamette and I think I'll use the Cascade.
