I went to Walgreens to pick up sone iodine for checking starch conversion, but they were out. I was told that due to the nuclear situation in Japan there is a shortage of iodine world wide.

I know iodine is used to treat radiation exposure victims for thyroid protection, but was surprised to hear there was such a shortage.

Will the clear iodine alternatives (iodides) work?

Sounds like BS to me. It's potassium iodide that's being bought up by nuclear ninnies, not the alcohol solution. If people are buying that out.... I hope they're drinking it.

Last time I went to Walgreens for iodine, I had to cajole some out of the pharmacist- for some reason they started keeping it behind the counter. You might try there if you only asked a clerk before. The iodides won't work- you need free iodine to react with the starch.
