Hey, everyone! I'm John, originally from Houston but now living in Nacogdoches (well, I will be back there on July 1st.... vacationing in Houston right now). While I have only brewed one batch of beer, I had a great time and want to do more. I don't have much experience but here are the beers I have tried and liked:

Shiner Bock
Shiner Bohemian Black Lager
Guinness
Samuel Adams Boston Lager

Like I said, not a long list. I don't really care if you hate Shiner/Guinness/whatever, but if you have suggestions on other beers I could try, that would be most appreciated! Thanks!!

Hi John and welcome to HBT! :mug:
What did you brew for your first beer and what do you think of it?
I actually had a Shiner Bock on tap before and I thought it was quite good. There is nothing at all wrong with your list of beers.
I would suggest, if you haven't already, trying a hoppy beer. They are the rage right now. I wouldn't get a six pack if it but maybe try a pint of IPA in a pub and see what you think. I personally don't care for the very hoppy beers but many people do.

I brewed a brown ale, didn't have a name that I can remember. It was an extract kit from my LHBS. I have nothing against trying something twice, so I will get a pint of IPA next time I can. What are some brands so that when I go to the pub I don't have a dumb bartender asking me "whats an eeepuh?"

Welcome aboard. How about some wheat beers? See if you can find a Paulaner or Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen or a Hoegaarden Belgian Wit (or Blue Moon if you can't). Seems like you like dark beers too, so you might give a porter a try if you haven't before. You should be able to find Sammy Smith's Taddy Porter, and maybe even Breckenridge's Vanilla Porter if you've got a beer store with a good selection nearby.

BTW - I was born in Nacanowhere. :D What got you to move up there?

The only reason I can see anyone moving here, college!

I have tried Blue Moon once, wasn't impressed. True to my own rule, I will try it once again. I have always wanted to try porter for some reason, as I imagined it would be good, lol. A friend of mine told me to try Sam Adams Honey Porter I believe. If this is wrong, don't berate me just correct me lol.

ok i am also from nacogdoches and i will give some recomendations go to continential liquors it's on north street right across from where they are building the chik-fil-a they have agreat selection of all kinds of beer and they are constantly rotating stock for new things. there a shaggy dark haired guy that stocks the beer there ask him for some help he is very knowledgeable and knows their stock they also have many single beers in the 16-22 oz range and they have about the best prices on beer in town also if you find something that you really like they will order it in for you.

Well, give Hoegaarden a try then. It really is a good beer - especially when it's DAMN hot outside like it's been.

Sam Adams Honey Porter is very good. It's probably my favorite Sam Adams beer. Give it a shot.

Welcome, John! There are some very good IPAs available in Texas right now. Just off hand, you might find Saint Arnold Elissa, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Bear Republic Racer 5, and Widmer Bros. Broken Halo. There are plenty of others out there, too, but my brain only works so well on Monday morning.
