Install 240 volt outlet and run extension cord 20+ feet to garage

Hello-

I am trying to figure out how to switch to electric brewing, as I don't really have the time to fuss with propane and basically watch or be near a pot for 3+ hours each brew day. I think my best bet in terms of cost and ease of use is getting a 3500 watt induction stovetop(Avantco), but I would need a 240 volt outlet which I don't currently have. My electrician said cheapest fix would be to install a 240 volt outlet near my panel, and then just run an extension cord about 20 feet into my garage. So I wonder how well this will work out, and whether it's safe/makes sense to run an extension cord for the 240 volt outlet.

The one major safety concern with extension cords is them becoming damaged or pinched. A long run of cord in itself is no danger. It's typical to have long drops of 240V cords hanging from the ceiling to power equipment in many industries.

If you are able to care for that cord like it was your child, then you should be good, I would think.

Yes, a 3 or 4 wire 240v extension cord is safe as long you aren't careless with it.

The alternative is to wire in a subpanel in your garage. It's not difficult to do, but it does require the tools and knowledge to do it (or a "professional").

With a dog and toddler, I don't really want to have to worry about the extension cord being an issue. I could talk to the electrician about doing the subpanel in the garage, he mentioned that as an option. Problem is I don't have $500+ to get that done either.

If you do the cord, look at ones for RV campers. They are made to take a bit abuse

I use my 25' generator transfer switch hookup cable.

Make sure that you have Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt in there somewhere!

I've been using a 25ft 240 Harbor Freight extension cord from day one for my 5500W setup. I run it from my dryer outlet up the stairs to my kitchen where I brew. Don't let anyone scare you. Its perfectly safe and works perfect without heating up even in the slightest. Save your money and use the extension cord if you want.

Have you ever used an extension cord in the rain?
Have you ever plugged in Christmas lights that were buried in snow?
Have you ever cut an extension cord in half with a hedge trimmer? Or anything else?

Then running an extension cord to brew beer for an hour seems pretty safe now doesn't it...worry not

You could make the extension cord yourself:

50' of 6/3 $162.00

25' of 6/3 $86.00

50' of 8/3 $116.00

25' of 8/3 $66.00

Of course there are other manufacturers that may be cheaper and some may be more expensive.

4 wire cord would be a little more expensive.

You would then need the two ends to suit your application:

Camco Handled Plugs make a good choice. You just need to pick the ones that fit your outlet and your heater.

Probably $35-$40 for both ends.

So you can make a 25' 3-wire extension cord for ~$110 - $130.

Post pictures of your outlet and the plug on your heater if you need help finding cord ends.

An attached garage might be around $500+ for a subpanel but a detached garage that needs cable + conduit buried and ground rods driven will certainly be more than that.
