Brewed a barleywine last night, pitched on a yeast cake of nottingham from an american pale ale. I had an OG of 1.094, and the bubbling started within the first hour. I realized I needed to hook up a blow off tube. This morning I came down to find an insane fermentation with foam pouring out the blow off tube and about a gallon of beer spilled out of the blow off glass. Fortunately the temp didn't rise above 68, and I moved the fermenter down to the basement where the temp is around 55. Its still aggressively fermenting and holding a temp of 68. Hopefully everything settles out soon, I'm sure it will, I just wasn't prepared for such a loss from the blow off tube, it may be as much as 2 gallons lost :( It was a 6.5 gallon carboy, with about 5.75 going in.

I brewed a BW last weekend with a gravity of 1.112. Pitched 2 packs of S-05. It's still going crazy and sitting at about the same temp, ambient is 58º. I made a new blow off tube, that fist in the opening of the carboy. After a week, it's still going pretty good.

that's awesome! :mug: a big brew like that going straight on a cake is gonna kick off like super bowl sunday! good thing you had that blowoff tube on there.and now ya know the fermentation's healthy. :rockin::rockin:

I know its not gonna help you now, but I would leave some extra head space in the carboy if pitching on an active cake. Probably too much healthy yeast as well. I would expect some hot alcohol flavor coming through. Hope what is left works out for you man.
Brew Strong! (as you clearly did here)
