So I am up sizing from 5 gallon to 10 gallon batches. What is the correct immersion coil size? Will 50' of 1/2" soft copper cool 12 gallons in ????? how many minutes with 55 deg + or - tap water? Thanks Dan

I have a 50 foot diy copper chiller, coiled it around a corny keg, and it's about a third out of the wort when I use it for 5 gal in my 10 gal bayou classic pot. I can't weigh in on the cooling time for 10 gal batches, but think that 50 feet is a good size for 5-10 gal batches.

You would be better off with two 25' coils and run them in parallel.

BJA ......... I was planning to do this double coil [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S94Lhp-bv8M&feature=youtu.be[/ame]
I just got a quote thru work for a 50' 1/2 soft copper roll for $40.02.

Thanks all for your help.

Well, that's not exactly what I meant. That's still a 50' coil. I meant 2 separate 25' coils and plumbing them in parallel, not series. I just think that the water temp in the coil equalizes long before reaching 50', so a lot of the tubing is wasted.

bja .... I followed your point but based on ports post ..... "A 50', 1/2" coil with 55 F water cools my 11 gallon batches to 65 in about 10-15 mins. I also whirlpool during cooling." ............ I figured that is going to work fine. Your point is a good one.
