Not a bad day morel hunting. 7lb 1oz all in one patch. These are the biggest morels I've ever seen. I found one tiny mushroom and kept looking for another half hour then stumbled across these gigantic morels.....my heart skipped a beat when I saw the first one.....I'm still in shock. I know what I'm having for dinner every night this week :D And of course we had to make a dick joke........

Wow- my husband just said he's very jealous of the size you display in your pictures.

Awesome- I can't believe how huge they are! We've never seen anything like that in morels before. You can grill one and feed a family of four!

We used to go pick morels every year in Michigan. I haven't had one in years. So good either fried in butter or dipped in flour and fried.

We used to pick mushrooms out in the cow pastures in Florida.:drunk::fro:

It's been years since I've had any morels. I was looking last weekend up at my camp but it was too cold and dry yet. With this weeks weather I expect to find quite a few next weekend when I go back up. Nice hearing they are sprouting up now.

We just got done eating the first round of the morels we picked today. A 12oz filet with morels sauteed in butter and deglazed with a little madiera. Holy crap was it good........can't wait to go looking for more tomorrow. We showed the pictures to the guys at the local gourmet market where we bought our filets. He told us of another good spot to go looking tomorrow...I'll post back with the results.

Thats awesome dude. I've always wanted to get into mushroom hunting. Something about the combination of loving the taste of mushrooms and getting food for free. How can you beat that?

I remember one day back in Minnesota, it was a nice warm spring day, adn I had been fishing on the Minnesota River, and having a few "Hydraulic Sandwiches" I turned off the riverbottom road and onto a trail that went up a hillside about 100 metres so I could relieve myself. I finished my business and was about ready to get back into my Blazer, when I looked across the hood and saw half a dozen Morels. I grabbed a grocery bag and went for a walk. I nearly filled the bag! When I stopped past my Dad's house he asked how long I had been hunting for them.. I said "I just drove up and parked next to them! I spent MANY hours that spring and early summer looking for more and the entire year yielded less than that one bathroom break

Here's a clue... remember the spot. They come up every year for quite a few years in a row in the same area. Maybe not on the same exact spot but usually within a hundred feet or so.

I wonder if they grow here in AUS?

I love mushrooms. At the same time, though, there aren't any here in North Dakota. Too dry. However, there is the occasional cactus. Cactus strips anyone? :cross: Hey, even better - anyone want to do a mushroom/cactus strip swap?

I used to find them in VA but haven't here in NY. What are the temps during the day there. I think it is still too cold here. That is one sweet haul.

You're from ND? My family is from Mandan so i come back there time and again.

Wow, that's pretty cool. I'm in Mandan too, specifically. Don't suppose you have any brewers in the family? :rockin: Either way, you should keep me in mind the next time you're in the neighborhood.

Morels grow on every continent in the world except for Antartica. I know New Zealand is not a continent, but from what I've seen of your landscape I would be terribly suprised if you didn't have some somewhere...

Unfortunately next time I'll be heading out there is probably for a funeral. My Grandma looks like she's about to exit, but she was the first one in our family to homebrew. Her and her father used to homebrew up on the farm in Garrison. So yeah, i'll definitely send you a PM or something next time i'm heading out.

My condolances to you on that one. : / I had a grandfather pass away less than a year ago, so I know where you're coming from.

I do know where Garrison is - heh, we bought a '78 Ford Fairmont there a while ago. Beautiful area, what with Lake Sakakawea, etc. Anyway, yeah, I look forward to possibly meeting up with you despite the circumstances.

Eh no worries, old people, it happens. She's my last connection to my German heritage so i've been sending her postcards like mad. Yeah, we still have a farmhous in Garrison from the early 1920's. Nice area, good fishing too. But yeah, look forward to it.

BACK ON TOPIC: What exactly does a morsel taste like?

Ambrosia... The food of the Gods!

Of course, everythign tastes great sauteed in butter :rockin:

I went back to my morel spot this morning. I really searched the area in the woods where I found them the first time. I found a few more, about another pound and a half, but I didn't find anymore in the entire woods. That was the only spot I found any. I took my GPS with me and saved the spot as "my honey hole". Does anyone know how long it would take a morel to get 12 inches tall? I suppose those were sitting there for over a week.

My husband said it wouldn't have necessarily been very long at all. If the temperature and moisture conditions are just right, they can grow alot in a week. Maybe the whole 12 inch mushrooms popped up in a week to 10 days, according to him. (He's a wild life biologist and does environmental studies all the time)

Sounds like a reliable source. Thats about what I was thinking...about a week or so. Thanks.

WooHoo! Nice score! I haven't had the time to even go out. :( . The Yellow Morel, aka 'Clubfoot' Morel is rightly named, as your pictures indicate. Personally, I prefer to dry them. If you've never done so: split, make sure no Centipedes, slugs, etc are hiding in there and then just set them on racks and let them dry at room temp in an area with good circulation. They produce this almost Ungodly smell (in a good way) of Almonds or what I feel is a deep nutty smell. Rehydrate in fresh cream, and use that as a reduction and it is an experience to behold!

They can grow quickly, but sometimes stagnate and seem to take forever. I have purposefully left small Morels to grow, only to come back a week later to basically very little growth. They certainly don't grow as fast as some species.

If there are any morel experts out there......what temp range is best for morels? What determines the end of the season? Its been fairly cool here in Ohio and I was thinking about looking again this week. Just curious. Thanks
