ice into wort

to cool my wort faster and to add water (extract brewing) i prefreeze 2 gallons of ice.

after the boil i just dump the ice into the wort to cool it and bring it up to working volume.

i have yet to try the beer but i have used this method twice.

is it a bad idea?
 
As long as the water is purified. I have done that also. I just freeze two gallons of spring water that I buy for brewing.

But if you make the jump to doing full boils it won't work for you. That's when you'll neede to invest in a wort chiller.
 
I'd pre-boil the water, then make your ice.
also, don't let the ice splash as you put it into the wort. Hot side aeration...not good for teh beer's flavor.
