I just got a good deal on 42 feet of 3/8od copper tubing so I have decided it is time to finally build an immersion chiller. Before I turn this into a chiller, I was wondering about the importance of chiller coil diameter. I was planning to make a 12" diameter coil, which would keep the entire coiled part of the chiller under the level of wort in the pot (14"id pot, btw). Is this a good idea, or is there some magic diameter of IC coils that I am unaware of?
