This is my second brew, I'm making some wine from welch's apple grape raspberry. I thought I sanitized everything. But even after 3 hours of introducing the yeast it looks like there are cotton balls floating in the fermentors. (which are brand new water cooler jugs) and they seem to be growing. Is this the yeast? or did I screw up somewhere?

3 hours???? take 4 beers and call me in the morning. :D relax and look in the morning. on the chance that you have fermentation happening already it might get violent. If you have a blow off tube use it. If not, put it in your tub and close the curtain. it will make clean up easier if needed.

it has now been 6 hours. It looks like the innards of a teddy bear have been stuffed into the fermentors. There are very few bubles. (About 1 per 5 mins)

Best advice is to get an opaque plastic primary fermenter. This way, you will never have to look at the process while it is underway. It's not always pretty.

This is the best brewing advice I have ever seen!!!!!!

You rock!!!! :D

(and you are right!)

GREAT OOGLY BOOGLY!!!!! I woke up this morning and the yeasties are going completely insane!! Its a really intense fermentation, like someone is letting the pressure out of a tire. There are 3 bubbles coming out of the airlock every second. Plenty of head space though

god, I'm such a noob.

Next time, try dropping one of these into your fermenter. It might take your attention away from the other things going on in there.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Good Idea....

Even better, you can kill 2 birds with one handgrenade and grow your own SWMBO or HWMBO while you wait for your beer to be ready...

This way you'll be guaranteed that he/she will like your beer, in fact you could say that it will be "mother's milk" to them...

If you already have a sig other, than you can grow them some bling instead.

Realistically, the yeast you pitched is the only thing that is present in enough numbers to be visible at 3 hours. Yeast can grow in chains and clumps. The doubling time is around 2 hours, so I think your batch is ok.

This can cause you some problems. First, they may not be impermeable to oxygen. Some plastics are porous, and can let gasses pass through tem. Also, it may be toxic. If it isn't #1 or #2 type plastic (should say in the recycle symbol, or PET or PETE) then it can leach toxins into whatever you have in the container. Get a food grade plastic bucket, carboy, or better bottle.
