I need something new.

Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, graphic, rants...whatever. Just as long as it is wild, subversive, smart, and out there...Any suggestions?

read any chuck palahniuk? his most widely known is Fight Club(made into film w/ Brad Pitt).

However, all of his other stuff is great. Definitely smart, out there, subversive, AND entertaining.

+1 on Choke. Good book. A little strange but otherwise good. Never "read" Fight Club though.

Try Insomnia by Stephen King or Lightning by Dean Koontz. I read "Lightning" about ten years ago, so my memory is a little foggy, but I remember it was good.

I've read most of his books, but the craziest book I've ever read was "Gerald's Game" by Steven King. Just down-right insane... Also, my wife really got into the Dark Tower series he recently finished. Insomnia was good to and, according to my wife, really tied into the Dark Tower.

I'll second anything by Chuck Palahniuk. Definitely. The book Fight Club is much better than the movie....anfd the movie kicked ass!:cross:

Another cool book is Enders Game by Orson Scott Card.

The Zombie Survival Guide...Max Brooks (Mel's son) Hilarious. Written like a wilderness survival guide for a zombie take over.

Hunter S. Thompson. While Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is his most famous book, I'd suggest Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga. Both are great, and were written before his mind got too toasted to be consistently coherent.

For something just as anti-social, but on a more personal level, check out Jonathan Ames. Some of his stuff will horrify you and make you laugh out loud at the same time...this guy ain't shy about anything. What's Not to Love?: The Adventures of a Mildly Perverted Young Writer would be a great place to start.

Really? I wasn't really that into it...

How about Less Than Zero by Brett Easton Ellis who also wrote American Psycho...

"People are afraid to merge on freeways in Los Angeles..."

I'd suggest the Hannibal books...er...the Thomas Harris series, featuring Dr. Hannibal Lecter, as it were, you know?

:cross:

Seriously, I'm sure this is old hat, but if you haven't READ the books, treat yourself.

:drunk:

Really alter the mind. Read Stephen King's "Desperation", then his alter-ego Richard Bachman's "The Regulators". You'll be cross-referencing for days....

I just read that one last year for a Sociology class at the University of Washington on Deviancy.

Attention

You have not yet read your favorite fictional story if you have not read George R. R. Martin's continuing "A Song Of Ice And Fire" series. If you don't think you like fantasy, read it anyway. It is completely different.

It is "out there", it is edgy, it is fascinating. It is this generation's LOTR all grown up.

It starts with "A Game Of Thrones". You will be hooked in a matter of words - not chapters or pages or even paragraphs.

Prepare to be very tired at work/school because you will be up late reading.

It makes Ender's Game look like it was written by a six year old.

HBO now owns the rights to an "on screen" version. That is going to be one huge project.

You all owe me beer.

That is all.

I agree with everyone's suggestions except Palahniuk, and that's only because I haven't read the books.

The book I would recommend is Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, especially funny if you went to Catholic school.

Best book I have ever read to date is. Lone Survivor. It is a great book, about some true American hero's.

Immanuel Velikovsky's Worlds in Collision. He writes a wonderfully convincing account of Venus having been captured by the sun's gravity after being ejected from Jupiter at around 15 BC. He cites lots of biblical references to support his theory and as a result pisses off pretty much all the major religions. While still a bestseller in the United States, the novel changed publishers. Not something that had ever happened before.

Turns out the whole thing is wrong. His theories have since been thoroughly discounted by modern astronomers for a number of different reasons. Still, it's fascinating when you read it knowing that.

One Foot In The Grave (and that whole series) - William Mark Simmons
Alvin Maker Series - Orson Scott Card
The Weapon - Michael Z. Williamson

Thanks for the ideas everyone! They are all great.

I'll start with BlindLemonLars's suggestion for something by Jonathan Ames..."horrify you and make you laugh out loud at the same time"...sounds like just what I am looking for.

Then "Choke" since its gotten such high marks from y'all.

And Bukowski. Definately need to work in some Bukowski. Haven't read him since college.

Keep the suggestions coming...I read fast.
