I need some computer help

Anything different network-wise (from a hardware standpoint) between your computer and SWMBO's laptop? Like maybe she connects wirelessly to a WAP where you're wired in to a different router? Share the same cable modem or DSL line (or whatever) if so? Have you tried rebooting everything upstream of your computer (modem(s) & router(s))?

It really sounds like its just Vista being crappy, yet again.

There's problems with the way they redid the tcp/ip stack, it'll open up too many sockets to one website, and then you can't get other websites to work at the time.

however that usually presents as 'intermittent' problems accessing sites...yours sounds too consistent.

have you tried using FireFox instead of Internet Explorer to view these sites?
have you turned off the Phishing Filter which might be blocking sites?


Have you thought about upgrading to Windows XP Pro? Its a vast improvement over Vista.

Yup, tried both....currently on FireFox

The Phishing Filter is on right now (bc the system restore) but it was off before and didn't do anything...

Yeah that would kinda suck but not as much as Vista does.... I'm sure I can get a copy off my stepbro....

Not a suggestion but I went from Vista Home Premium to Ubuntu. Aside from the learning curve of a new OS (which is lower on Ubuntu than other flavors of linux) and for the vast majority of the computing I do on the laptop it is more than adequate.

My gaming desktop runs Windows XP though.

Mine does this, but usually closing then re-opening all browser windows fixes the issue. Real freeken convenient.

Well, Alamo, that tracert was incredibly not helpful! It shows you connect all the way up to the end then it stops just before the last IP address. The traceroute was hopefully going to show where the break in the hops are in the network to your destination.

I, too, also suggest upgrading to Windows XP Pro. I'm stumped.

Are you by chance running it through a linksys router? I had this problem a while ago my vista machine would not connect to some sites and my XP ones would.. Updating the firmware on my router fixed it.

Also make sure you have patched Vista up to date

I'll put in another vote for installing XP Pro. I used Vista for about 2 weeks then went back to XP.

Cool, I'm at work now but I'll do another trace when I get home...

Vista does freakin suck! When I first saw it (on SWMBO's parent's computer) I had no freakin idea where anything was! We were using word and couldn't even find print.....had to just hit CTRL + P. Her 13yr old sister had to show us....made me feel old at 22!!

I'll also try and dl the service pack. The tech from Grande (our ISP) is coming out tomorrow but I'm worried thier gonna charge us bc its not going to be a problem w/thier modem. I might just cancel...

Oh, and it's a direct connection....no router

If you are considering switching OS's give Linux a try. Unless you are a gamer there really isn't much any downside to it as most commonly used apps are either available on there or there are other compatible apps that take their place.

You can try it out without any hassle at all, just pick up any number of live CD's out there and boot from them. If it isn't for you just remove the CD, reboot and that is that.

Plus it can be had free of charge (legally) whereas XP Pro is still gonna run you a few dollars.

Admittedly though, the main draw for me at least was the eye candy factor of Compiz. http://compiz.org/

I think I may have solved it! (at least come up with some empirical data)

Almost all of the websites affected by this are dropping ICMP packets! I just had a customer with the same issue with southwest.com

When I tried to ping the websites people have listed they almost all drop the packets and do not return anything.

If there is something at all wrong with tcp/ip on your system, the following may help take care of it. First you may need to follow the process outlined here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/...le-user-account-control-uac-in-windows-vista/

1. Click on Start button.
2. Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.
3. Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run Command Prompt as Administrator. Allow elevation request.
4. Type netsh int ip reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
5. Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
6. Restart the computer.


In my years of troubleshooting XP, the first command never seemed to help much, but the second one I listed fixed a lot of trouble. Before SP1 was released instead of running that command you had to dig in the registry to accomplish the same thing =P

+1 Ubuntu. Remember how linux used to suck unless you were a masochistic command-line fetishist? Well fun fact, it doesn't anymore. I run it on my desktop. Only thing I ever use Windows for these days is MSPaint (best microsoft product).

OS X is still my favourite OS (converted two years ago), but nobody wants to go sink more into more new equipment when they just bought something. An HBT'er would never do that.

I will just make a couple of suggestions based upon some digging I read about your problem. No matter what your opinion is of Microsoft .....Vista should display the sites mentioned so there is something very wrong in the system files.

Have you tried to connect to the web in Safe Mode?

I would turn off the UAC module in Vista and see if that helps.

If these don't help I would reload the whole system again to a fresh state. It's just faster to reload the whole darn OS.
