Am I the only homebrewer that doesn't go around memorizing the catalog numbers for yeast? Every single yeast thread I see has people ranting or raving about yeast and I never know which one they are getting all excited about, cause they always just put down a damned number. USE WORDS, PEOPLE!!!!!

Ok, rant over. Feel free to respond with multiple references to various yeasts using only the catalog numbers just to get under my skin.....:drunk:

I'm with you BB, that's what they make a chart, or a smart phone. I have limited data storage space between my ears.

And I would never dis you, you have saved me countless $ with your "yeast washing" tutorial.

some of us don't have LHBS who do much in the way of yeast, so it pays to know the catalog number so you can ask them to order the stuff in ;)

I'm lucky to find anything beyond standard Lalvin EC-1118, Safale-04 or Nottingham Ale. When one of the health food stores here got in a few packets of Lalvin-71b I jumped on it; finding a decent red wind/cider yeast is nigh-on impossible here.

what do you mean? 1047 is awesome! I think that Wyeast American Ale but I could be wrong but I do use it a lot.

Yeah sometimes i see this and am like hmm is it worth it to look this yeast up?No. Next thread... but say what it is for
****'s sake, who wants to look it up?

I was always under the impression that those (S-04, D-47, etc...) were manufacturer designations. Actual catalog numbers can & often do vary, unless the company's catalog simply uses manufacturer ID code designations.

Even names can be confusing. For example: Lallemand makes Nottingham AND Lalvin yeasts. Remembering yeast designations really isn't all that different from remembering which beer style has X number of IBU's, or an SRM of X; or even Lovibond ratings for malt. When it comes right down to it, all written language is simply a sort of code, whether it's English, German, Chinese or txtsp3@k.
I feel your pain though. :mug:
Regards, GF.

Would it really help if I told you I was using London Ale III or Thames Valley as oppose to Wyeast 1318 or 1275? :drunk:

I like using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It doesn't really matter the number associated with it as long as it is not Yeastus Vaginus. HA!

wait are you talking about some thing like this?

Yeast Strain Sources

Yeast Strain Comparison Chart (White Labs, Wyeast)

This info was put together by Kristen England. He says, "I tried to get the exact source of each breweries yeast and if I was confident I was correct I put the original brewery. If I have evidence of a yeast strain but NOT am not 100% confident I put my idea and a '?'. If you have any questions, comments or input please let me know."

Flomaster-

I am NOT gonna sit and look up the names of the yeast every time you guys have a yeast thread! All I ask is you type the names along with the numbers!!! Grrrrr!

I say use numbers, not words. Makes it a lot easier to understand what yeast someone is referencing.

I only use Wyeast, and only use 1056, 1028 and 2124 on a regular basis. It's not that hard to memorize 3 numbers. ;)

TRANSLATION

I only use Wyeast, and only use American Ale Yeast, London Ale Yeast, and Steinbart Yeast on a regular basis.:D

I agree with the original poster, I hate looking up yeast names that go along with the numbers. Same thing with abbreviations, I can make up an abbreviation for anything that doesn't mean it means jack to the rest of the world.

In beginner forums someone will ask how to make a hoppy beer and replies say "add MH, FWH, FO, DH and use 001/1056/US-05"
People assume that somehow everyone who brews has had some database implanted in their brain.

Yeast numbers make sense, but that MH, FWH, FO, DH, are not normal and I've no idea what you are talking about

Exactly the point.

MH - Mash Hop
FWH - First Wort Hop
FO - Flame-Out
DH - Dry Hop
