I brewed an imperial IPA 3 weeks ago and needed some citra hops and all my LHBS had was a whole pound of citra pellets. So i bought it obviously and only used about 4 ounces. Then a week later I wanted to used the rest so I made just a regular IPA and used 4 more ounces. I'm pretty new to homebrewing so this experience made me realize that a pound of hops is a freaking butt load of hops. So now I'm faced with what to do with the other 8 ounces considering I'm already fermenting 10 gallons of super hoppy beer. Does anyone have any suggestions what else citra hops would taste good in? I don't want these hops to go bad so I just wanted to think of different ways to use them.

I'd use them in a hoppy saison, or maybe a more tropical witbier. I've been going on a tyrade of making IPA-hybrids. Saisons and witbiers are my faovrite since they have that crisp dry body like IPAs

Keep them in the freezer and you will be good for awhile (read months), even if they aren't vacuumed sealed. No need to rush through them. But when you are ready, the Zombie Dust clone is a good recipe and it takes 8 ounces of hops, so you would be set.

I was leaning towards a Saison actually. I'm guessing that will probably only use about 2 ounces tops of aroma hops. I suppose 6 oz hopped zombie dust will be in order after wards. Thanks!

so a ton = a pound. in that case, i have 2 tons pre-ordered from label peelers that i wish would hurry up and get here.

I remember when I thought a pound was a lot. I must have 20+ pounds right now. And most of it is from 2014 harvest.

On a serious note, fruity hops can go with a lot of styles. Maibock is one that it goes well. A brown on the India side would work as well.

make that 5 tons for me, and yeah....needing them for some planned brews

and actually 2 pounds of it is citra (zombie dust rules :rockin: )

Double Ziploc them and put them in your freezer, I'm still using hops from 2 yrs ago this way and they are fine.

i actually have the same...2 lbs citra, 1 lb each of centennial, simcoe and amarillo. i ordered 3 more lbs from yakima valley last week and already have them...hurry up label peelers!

Are you dry hopping either of your two IPAs? Would be another good way to use some.

Yup. The imperial ipa is being dry hopped with 2 ounces dried citra I had previous to the lb. I was planning on dry hopping the ipa with 2 ounces of citra pellets. And I suppose with the saison 2 ounces of pellets as well?

4 ounces in each of the 2 brews = 8 ounces. 4 ounces for dry hopping - 12 total that only leaves you with 4 ounces.

I detect a problem... YOU NEED MORE!!!!!!

2nd on the ZD clone. Excellent recipe and a perfect use for 8 oz of citra.

One pound of hops per five gal of iipa is how I roll!

Damn son, you don't play. I'm clowning apparently because I only used 8 oz total including dry hop for the iipa - 2 Columbus, 1 Amarillo, 2 simcoe, 1 galaxy, and 2 citra dry hop. Had a sample tonight of it after about 3 days dry hopping and it friggin banging. Kinda wish I had put more citra in it at flame out but whatever. It's gonna be a great beer regardless.

I use a lot for flavor/aroma as well as a decent sized double dry hop. I bitter with only 1.5-2 oz of high Alfa so all the rest is for flavor/aroma. I love seeing that thick oil slick on top of the finished beer. That's the sweet stuff!

Of course, that is an over the top iipa. A great iipa can be had with 8oz. But what's a few extra oz when you but in bulk. I average about $16 to $18 a lb.
