I emailed the brewer of my favorite IPA, and he gave me some hints...

...to go about brewing it.

His hints were essentially this:

  • shoot for a copper to light amber colored wort about 16.8 plato 4 to 5 different malts.
  • 125 IBU's (4 varieties). 4 kettle additions 60 min, 30 min, 10 min and flame out plus one massive dry hop.
  • dry hop at a rate of 1lb./31 gal. thats roughly equal to the first two kettle additions.

I know from his website that it comes out around 7%ABV.

Here is the recipe I came up with....

So, what do you think? It's a really hoppy, and really aromatic brew, especially when fresh.

Have you brewed this? It looks good!
One question, under "Mash" you have 60 minutes, 9.0 gallons.
What does that mean? If you don't mind me asking?:)

60 minutes is the total mash time (time to hold the mash at 152), and 9 gallons is the total amount of water for both strike and sparge. It's kind of a clumsy way of putting it, I suppose.

No, I haven't made this. I just came up with the recipe tonight.

According to the BV number I've calculated, it comes out at 1.79, which is in the ball park for an IPA....

Unless someone has serious problems with this one, I'll probably brew it in a couple of weeks....

just out of curiosity, what beer are you trying to emulate?

Ahh, works for me! Thanks
Looks like one for me to try in the near future!!
Keep us updated on the results!

I've known Joe for along time and he wont tell me Jack about his hops in that beer...He did tell me his calulated IBU'S are like 264 in that beer.

Pat

I wonder if he's trying to throw me off by telling me he's getting 125 IBU?... ;)
