So i always had a problem with hydrometers showing me everything but SG....

I tried searching for "Single scale" never could find one....

But i finally found it, and apparently their called "Plain form", not single scale...

Just thought i'd share in case anyone else wants a single scale hydrometer that just has SG all the way around!

what, and place the hydrometer on a pedestal? ;)

I just took readings and went 3 of 3 with hydrometer #s facing me. Time to go buy a lottery ticket!

as a first test i just filled a graduated cylinder with water and spun my "Plain Form" one 6 times and it was like i couldn't lose!

(there's always someone luckier!)

it does still have 'unlabeled' SG .002 increments...but their only a third of the radius/circumfrance( WTF ever), and it works every time so far!

i might look for one that goes from .990 to 1.100 though....

i think i might get this, and not only solve the not facing me...but also the wondering if it's closer to the bottom mark or the top one! this has .001 precision!

and i rarely brew anything bigger than 1.060, so.... perfect!

edit:
wait this one's better! "Plain Form" is the science word i needed to learn!

edit #2, lol:

hell now we're talking 1.000 to 1.070, with .0005 precision!

There's plenty of narrow range ones that are single scale. Specific gravity single scale is easy to find. Should be attainable at most any LHBS and definitely online.

A refractometer for hot side and a 0.990-1.020 hydrometer for cold side and you should be set for almost all beers (big high finishers aside).

Are the numbers on the "plain form" hydrometer visible from any angle? It looks like they are printed on one side only. -- Problem not solved.....

I got these single scale hydrometers: Brewery Essentials Herculometer™ Advanced Gravity Testing Kit

The numbers are only on one side.......

it's got 1.002 lines....I can see the 1.010 lines and the .002 at the same time....and the .002 are only a third of the way around, so at any angle, all i get is SG bliss! :mug:

(it is reading 1.002 in tap water though... plan on buying a jug of distilled next time i'm at the store to check on that....)

edit: i don't know about others though...i plan on buying a 1.000-1.070 plain form one, next year, though...so i'll let you know about it...

edit #2: apparently they have plastic ones too! that cost WAY too much! i wonder if they'd survive a drop to the floor....

(and new things don't happen often for me in brewing, so yes. i'm running on a little bit) ;)
