Getting a hydrometer and have seen different prices at different places, are all hydrometers the same? For example if I picked one up at a pet store?

There are really only two types of hydrometers.

1. Those that have broken.

2. Those that will break soon.

the pet store one is probably for salinity and calibrated cold in the 50 range.

Most triple scales are created equal, however you can get ones calibrated @ 155 for mashing
Some have a really wide range.
Some are focused in the .9 to 1.04 range to be very accurate.

if'n you got the change get a refractometer. They're far easier to use, cause less waste of product, and can be had online in the 45-60$ range. They'll last you forever if you take care of them.

The only trick to the hydrometer is being damn positive about your gravity before you add the yeast. You'll need that # for subsequent readings from that batch.

I have a pet store hydrometer and it works but it is maxed out at 1.060. The temp should not be an issue.
