Hydrometer reading after transfer to primary

What is the best way to take a hydrometer reading after my beer has been transfered to the primary fermenter?

The same way brewers should always take hydrometer ratings, with a sanitary wine thief.

I normally just catch a little of the wort stream as it flows into the fermenter.
