I started my third batch of beer today. It was my first time using a hydrometer. I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what my OG was. The wort was 75-77 degrees.

Thank you!

1.041. I think Hydros are calibrated at 60, so I don't know how much +15-17F will make. The calculator I use says your OG is closer to 1.043

Hydrometers can be calibrated at different temps - usually 60 or 68. It should say on the hydrometer. Most hydrometers also have a temp correction table usually on the paper lining the tube it came in. If you don't have that table, you can google it and find a table for you calibration temp. Check both of these and you will get the right temp correction for your reading.

Looks like 1.042 to me, plus whatever you need to add for temp correction. You need to know what temp it's calibrated to as mentioned, then use a correction calculator like this. If your hydrometer is calibrated to 60* the reading would be 1.044.

+1... I see 1.042 and definitely correct for temp.

Remember to read from the bottom of the meniscus and you'll be golden. Also, your hydrometer will say what temperature it is calibrated to somewhere on it. Mine is 5 years old and is calibrated to 60°F, but all the new ones I've seen are calibrated to 68°F.

You might want to give it a test in plain water as well. I was using mine for over a year and didn't realize it was 4pts low. So now I just adjust the reading.
