So, my brother and I have talked about brewing our own beer for well over a year (maybe 2) and we finally started about 2.5 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure we funked our first batch (you can read about it here), but I am far from discouraged. I've already placed my order for my second batch. So has my brother - but we're doing our own separate brews this time.
I'm married, 35, with two kids and a regular 9-5 type job. So most of my brewing will be done on weekends. "Little" brother is younger, never been married, no kids - so he is planning on getting his second brew going tonight.
The best thing about our new hobby is that we live pretty close (like a 45-minute drive from my house) to the warehouse/storefront for Rebel Brewer Homebrew Supply. So when we went down and bought all our gear and ingredients from them the first time, the guys there had all kinds of helpful tips and pointed out a few pieces of their gear that would be super helpful for first-timers (it was) and they even took us in the back and showed us the whole operation. It smelled incredible and it was pretty neat just seeing all the huge sacks of grain and the walk-in where they kept all the hops. It's also nice not to have to pay shipping. I just have to place my order online, leave them a note letting them know when I'll be down to pick it up and then just walk in, they hand it to me and walk out.
Anyway, my brew No. 2 is going to be their ESB recipe kit. It's not my favorite kind of beer, but my wife and my best friend love it, so this is going to be my Christmas treat for them.
At this point, I am just hooked on brewing and am already wondering what to dump in the fermenting bucket after the ESB.
