Howdy... K, now that the warm welcomes are out of the way, a bit about me.

I recently moved back to Oregon after taking a job working for an offshore surveying company based out of Houston, Texas. Ironically enough, I've got a BS in Electronics Engineering from Oregon Tech.

Before I started down the engineering path, I spent two years in high school studying in a school-to-work program to become a chef. So I have a bit of experience in cooking and kitchen management. However, I am fairly new to beers in general. What little drinking I have done in my college years (keep in mind I went to Nerd U) was mostly whiskeys and mixed drinks.

I have found that I am not a fan of the more common brews like Coors, but I do enjoy Fat Tire Amber Ale and Black Butte Porter. I am open to trying new types though.

As of right now I am researching building a basic level brewing kit to make small batches as an introduction to the art. I have a strong tendency to jump into things with both feet and expect to walk on water when I land, so I'm trying to take this a bit slower. Any basic recipes or brews for beginners would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and I will be seeing you all in the forums.

http://www.oregonbrewcrew.com/ This month's meeting is the holiday party, so you would have to send them money asap to attend.

And, of course: Tis the season for the Holiday Ale Festival, a joyous winter tradition at which to celebrate the most wonderful time — and beer — of the year. The 11th annual event will take place Nov. 30 through Dec. 3 at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Jump into that with both feet & you best be wearing your hip boots.

Welcome!

My first few attemps were with kits from online stores. They're nice because the ingredients are all measured and there are percise instructions. Midwest, Northern and AHB are all well known for quality kits.

Just take a look at the descriptions and select something that sounds good to you. There are Fat Tire clones and all sorts of porters to choose from.

Once you're confident in the process, you can spread your wings a little (or a lot)
