Hey all,

Not sure if this is the right part of the forum for this, but here goes. Myself and the girlfriend are currently trying our hand at brewing a banana wine, and we're not too sure how to calculate an accurate ABV due to the addition of sugar when we racked it from the primary. I haven't got the exact figures to hand, but I was wondering if there was a formula or anything to compensate for the added sugar? Considering that would definitely throw off the usual progression from OG to FG.

Edit: Got the numbers there. It started at an OG of 1.112, which dropped to 1.024. At this point we racked it into another container and added 2 kilos of sugar to the 23 litres, and left it for another while. When we tested it again about two weeks later it it was 0.990.

Why add more sugar?????? Your starting gravity was already borderline too high. That will be undrinkable for several years.

.990
Got bugs?

Oh and if my math is right your corrected gravity would be 1.146 for almost 21% abv!

Believe it or not, it's actually pretty tasty already! Much closer to vodka than wine, of course, but mixed with the right drink it's just the right mix of banana and alcohol. This was more of an experiment than anything else. We wanted to see how far we could push it and found a good recipe.

Can you tell me how you reached the corrected ABV? It'd be handy to know in future, and to know just how strong this brew actually is. By our maths it's 16.3% but we know that's miles off.

Not sure it's right, but I would add it into your brewing software as an addition. That will tell you the equivalent of O. G. I don't think the sugar being added later matters. Starting gravity vs final gravity gives you the calculation.

Right?
