How soon should there be a yeast cake? Only been 2 hours.

Hey everyone,

Made my first batch of beer today, a Honey Brown extract kit from northern brewer. About two hours after pitching the yeast, there is already a layer of sediment or yeast on the bottom. Is this normal? Not really any airlock activity yet.

Looks good for where you are. Bubbling may take 48hrs or more

More than likely, that's trub- not yeast. Just the proteins and other junk that was in your wort and is dropping out. You'll notice as the beer gets closer to being done fermenting that there's a creamy off-white layer on top of the junk tha'ts there now- THAT'S your yeast cake.

Enjoy!

That's cold break, for sure. No worries! You're likely (but not certain) to see airlock activity in the next 12-48 hours or so.

It's the fine poufy trub that settles out first. Cold break is a little slower to settle & looks like wet popcorn. The grains can be huge or small with this wet popcorn stuff. But as mentioned, the yeast will be a devonshire cream color when it settles out on top of that brown stuff.
