So I'm priming my brew tonight, I'm brewing 2 gallons of and ipa and was wondering how much sugar should I add? Is there a regular chart I can follow or some sort of equation? I don't want to add it to each bottle individually because I heard that can being up problems. Instead I want to add it right into the brew. Do I need to rack it first then add or can I just make the solution and add it right in there?

You can search for a priming calculator but 5 oz of corn sugar by weight for 5 gallons of ale. So 2 gallons would be 2 ounces.

Dissolve that in a cup of boiling water (2 cups for 5 oz) and dump that into the bottling bucket. Then you rack onto it trying to aerate as little as possible. The swirling of the beer should mix your sugar into it uniformly.

If you care to get technical you can use a calculator online. I use the one at tastybrew.com since it also has style guidelines.

Are you referring to priming sugar used for carbonation? If so then you add 1oz of sugar per gallon of beer before right before you bottle your beer.

k so I got 1.5oz for 2 gallons, now do I need to mix that into water before I add it into the beer? If so how much. Sorry for being a pain, its my first brew and everything I have found has been for 5 gallons.

Yes, boil a cup of water and add the sugar to it. Stir well, to dissolve and boil it for a couple of minutes. Turn off the heat, and put it into your sanitized bottling bucket. Then rack the beer into the bottling bucket, with the tip of the tubing in a circle on the bottom of the bottling so that the beer fills from the bottom while swirling in and mixing up the priming solution and the beer. You can also give it a very gentle stir with a sanitized spoon to ensure it's mixed well. But never aerate or splash- you can oxidize the beer that way!
