Let's start off 2021 with a new thread of how much coffee was roasted. It appears as of creating this thread we ended 2020 with 720.52 pounds of coffee roasted last year.

Over the last week or two I roasted 0.75 pounds of Congo and Rwanda beans to kick off the new year. The count starts at:

1.5lbs

So....

That comes to a total of....
15433 grams which equals 34 pounds.
You sure on adding my totals? LoL!!!
If so then total for thread is 37 pounds.

You're a home roaster, I would keep adding your roasting totals here. I don't roast as much as you but whatever I roast even if it's for gifts and what not I include it.

Yeah, Ruint, we count on you. It also compensates for people like me who can't keep up with posting. Well, it over-compensates. I probably roasted another 5 pounds last year that I didn't get around to posting.

Slightly off-topic:
I finished the 'fancier' coffees last year, and decided to order another ten pounds of the cheap ($4/lb) Brazilian from Wisconsin. I concluded that for me the roast profile completely dominates the flavor. For me there seems to be no point in buying expensive $10+/lb Jemeni mocca (some of which I really liked, but some I didn't) when I can roast a $4/lb Brazilian in a way that yields both a tasty espresso and a tasty breakfast americano.
Maybe my taste buds are not discerning enough? I definitely do like my roasts better than commercial coffees, e.g. Starbucks.

I do find though that I have to pay attention to where (at what temperature) and when I switch heater settings on my SR500; going completely by the seat of my pants does not give reproducible results.

Anyways, a happy 2021 to everybody! Don't burn your beans!

I ran out of coffee AGAIN, and roasted another 17 ounces; together with a roasting session earlier this month, also short because just like today I was hoping for warmer weather soon (yeah, right..), this makes 2 lbs and 2 ounces, or 2.13 lbs, for a total of 40.38 lbs.

At least for espresso, I find the freshly roasted stuff (no 24 hr waiting period after roasting) entirely drinkable. But maybe this is only true for low acidity coffee that you don't have to roast too hard (dark).

Another 1.75 lbs. Total 45.13 lbs.

The colder temperature really does make a significant difference; a single 7oz batch now takes 20 minutes, and I have to switch the SR500 to the high setting to reach 400 F. In the summer I could let a roast finish on the medium setting (although I typically don't).

In January I roasted 1 pound of Yemen and Java and today I roasted 4oz each of Kenya Nyeri Kamoini AA, Columbia Buesaco Vereda Veracruz, Guatemala Anigua Pulcal Yellow Bourbon and Ethiopia Yirga Cheffe Konga Station beans.

46.63 + 2 = 48.63

I roasted another 5 batches or about 35 ounces today. We are counting the weight before roasting, right?

48.63 + 2.17 = 50.8 lbs

And here are some infrared pics of my SR500, taken with my new extra sturdy old person phone (BV9900pro). Pretty amazing what they are putting into phones these days! The pics are actually overlays of an edge-enhanced optical pic and the 80 by 60 pixel IR image; the phone does this automatically.

The last pic makes it seem like the IR measurement is off compared to the analog thermometer, but if one points the camera more carefully, the two measurements are actually amazingly close:

Ruint, they are all with beans in the roaster. The resolution of that IR imager is pretty low, so the IR part/overlay of the image is just going to be one amorphous hot blob. In the first pic you can some beans in the optical overlay, near the bottom. The yellow blob towards the top is probably the mass of floating bouncing beans.

I roasted another 4 batches, 26 oz raw, 19.5 oz roasted. 25% loss seems at the high end of the normal weight loss. These are the Brazilian beans I had mentioned earlier.
Also, I think the IR pics just show the glass temperature, not the beans inside. Probably not so far off though in the top single wall part.

So 1.63 lbs before roasting, for a total of
99.0 lbs.

I roasted another 6 batches and checked my yield again: the roasting weight loss is indeed about 22%. Out of each 6 oz cup of green beans - one batch for the SR500 with extender tube - I get 1.6 cups of roasted beans (60% volume increase) that weigh 4 2/3 oz.
6 batches = 36 oz = 2 1/4 lbs

103 + 2.25 = 105.25 lbs
