So inherited some canned malt and crystallized malt extract. Some for dark beer and some for ales. I can't tell how old it is and was wondering how long it can stay usable. Cheers!!

Fresher is better. As long as LME unopened and isn't ancient, it's probably okay. As long as DME hasn't been exposed to moisture, it's okay. You might want to toss some yeast nutrient in with it when you decide to use it to make sure you get a healthy fermentation.

LME is 'close to fresh' for probably 6 months after you buy it(assuming it didn't sit in the store for years) as long as it's not stored above 70 or so. Then it gradually gets stale(cardboard, musty smell and flavor).
DME will last for years as long as it's stored to prevent it from absorbing moisture from the air(double ziplocks).
You won't be able to tell until you try it.
