Does anybody know how far pollen from a male(obviously) hop plant can travel. I have 5 varieties of rhizomes planted at my house and i also have about 50 or more seeds in my fridge - and want to plant those when they sprout. I just wanted to know about how far away i should plant the seeds that sprout from my legit varieties?

I found an article that quoted a study in Australia where pollen from oilseed rape traveled up to 3km. I assume it varies for different plants and local environmental conditions, but I'd suspect it's very possible for it to travel at least several hundred yards.

If a bee grabs some it can haul it an awfully long ways... If you want to deal with males, do it intentionally and try your hand at some crossing. Or just deal with seeds, they aren't a problem unless you want them to be.

Hop pollen is very light, so I understand that it can travel a mile or more. If you want to be safe, plant the seeds in a greenhouse or other contained environment so you can kill off the males before the pollen spreads.
