I had been doing eBIAB but I scorched a bag and killed a batch (was undrinkable). I've since gone to a mash/batch sparge, using my eKeggle for heating/boiling. But I'm having trouble maintaining mash temps. I've wrapped a thin blanket around the mash tun. I suspect more could be done there. I could do HERMS with a copper coil in the MT and recirc hot water from the BK.

looking for more input. am I just poorly insulated?

Rig: two keggles. One is eBK and MT. Bucket to drain from MT, acting as HLT and then back to BK to boil.

build a false bottom to keep you mesh bag off the element. or get a pump and build a HERMS setup. I dunno I just got a RIMS tube and i'm sure excited to start using it.

A combination of thermal mass and insulation.

1 1/2" of bubble wrap (Reflectix) and a 2" foam plug for a lid (wrapped in Reflectix and taped with AL tape). Bottom is also 2" foam.

I do a thin mash such that the Keggle is at least 2/3's full of grain and water. I do a decoction at about 30 minutes to bump the temp back up.

So I have 56 #'s of water and 20 # of grain so about 75# of 155 F thermal mass with R15 insulation...I drop 2 degrees in 30 minutes on a bad day.
