How do you feel about hummus?

You can get it dried and just add water from healthfood stores,but you can also get them dried i think instead of canned,i love the stuff and pay under 4 bucks around here but i also like the probiotic kind i get, this stuff is just a great bean dip especially when you get bored with salsa,although now im starting to think about guacamole and how awesome that stuff is too,especially made fresh- salt pepper a little lime juice,garlic,maybe cilantro-good to go
 
I can see my self making a borderline under-the-influence trip to the store for pita bread and tahini this evening...

I'd better just go now.
 
Aaaand we are golden. The Baba Ganooj comments inspired me to put some spicy curry powder in, and it rocks.

Ok, I've been inspired to make my own finally. Always buy the roasted garlic stuff from Hannaford and eat it with the Tostitoes multigrain chips. So good!
 
As I was eating this last night it occured to me what makes the homemade hummus so much better is the consistency. The store bought stuff seems dense and stodgy in comparison. Also, it cost me less than $2 to make a quart of it.
 
Hummus is awesome, and I'd love to start making my own, but I can never find tahini. Can any of you find it at large grocery chains like Kroger or do you have to go to specialty stores/Middle Eastern groceries?

I can find it at Jewel, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. In the larger stores, you usually have to head to the ethnic aisles (most stores have them now).
 
Its easy to find... its either in the ethnic aisle like ace said or this last time I found they were keeping it with the nut butters.
 
My wife makes hummus every Saturday for football. Quick and easy. Throw a can of chickpeas in a blender (we use a magic bullet-quick and easy to clean) throw in some spices, whatever liquid you have around (lemonade,wine, whatever) and give it a whirl. Quick, easy, and healthy!
 
I work very close to a Middle Eastern grocery store, so today I picked up a 32oz. jar of tahini for $8. Does that sound like a good price?

Anyway, I have a slow cooker so I will be getting the dried garbanzo beans and forgo the canned beans. Thanks for the recipes and I'll let you guys know how it turns out!


BTW, I love the responses this thread got.
 
I got a 16 ounce jar of the tahini for $6.50 so that sounds like a great deal to me

I can find it pretty much all my grocery stores (Harris Teeter, Whole Foods, Trader Joes), but they have a ton of options for it on Amazon. I get food on Amazon from time to time and am always impressed.
 
This thread has been giving me the urge to make some hummus all weekend :(. Now I am going to have to go out and buy the stuff.

When I first tried hummus I was not a huge fan, I think it was texture that kinda threw me off. Now I love the stuff, and am intrigued to try some of the recipes described here.

You could probably get it smooth if you have a Vitamix or some other kind of high performance blender, but any other way I think it would come out really gritty. And as far as I remember sesame seeds aren't exactly dirt cheap either.

It has a slightly bitter, very piquant flavor. I wouldn't call it VERY bitter, and by the time you dilute it with the garbanzos and other ingredients you shouldn't taste any bitterness at all.
 
So, my first batch of hummus has more garlic than I intended. Don't get me wrong, I love garlic and this hummus is good, but I can't eat a lot of it at once. I guess that's a good thing though.

I don't have a food processor, so while the hummus was not chunky it wasn't quite the paste that you can get from the grocery store or Pita Jungle and places of that nature. I shall make more in the future though. Thanks for all of the suggestions!
