Hey fellas,

Can anyone tell me if this will be ok for my first Mini-Mash. I have only done Extracts before for about 2 years and want to try something more advanced.

23 Litres Water
Coopers Real Ale Liquid Extract 1.73kg
1kg 2 Row pale Malt (Infusion 60 min /Strike 160F/Range 145-155F
1kg Light dry Malt Extract
500g Munich Malt
500g Crystal Malt
1oz Saaz (Bitter)- 50 min
1 Tsp Irish Moss (Clearing)-10 min
1oz Cascades (Flavour)- 15 min
1oz Saaz (Aroma)- 5 min
Wyest liquid (Not sure yet)

What do you guys think because I'm no expert when it comes to the mini mash. I used beersmith and it looks to be about 1.050 OG with a final ABV of about 5.5 with a FG of about 1.010-1.015.

Any help or comments would be awesome... Thank

When I'm mashing I only use 2.6 litres per kilo of grain. Let it sit at 68c for and hour then rinse with more water at 77c. If I was you I'd use around 3 litres to do the "mini mash" and the other 3 litres to rinse more wort from the grain. (If the extract need boiling add that) Then boil for 15 minutes then had the hops then boil the 45m minutes.

Ya I grew up with metric system myself but I tend to switch back and forth . Thanks for the tip I'll try the 3 liter boil with the 3 liter sparge for sure
 
I like the metric system, but I have to use (sub)standard to be understood in the USA. An odd historical note, the US Interstate system was originally spec'd in metric.

I'm definitely an ignorant American when it comes to metric. I remember in grade school the teachers told us the US would convert to metric some day. I don't think we ever will. I'm sure metric is easier but I'm so used to our silly ways I don't think I can change.
 
One of the best things is 1l of water = 1kg in weight.
23l is 23l all over the world. wereas a gallon changes.
blah blah blah.

I must admit if feel isolated doing a mash at 2.61l/g @ 68c.

But I'm two faced when it comes to drinking the stuff. I'd defend my right to drink a pint till the end. :mug:

And like I always say, What ever works for you. It's your brew!
 
:off: Okay, I feel I have to (partially) defend the standard system. One pint of water weighs one pound, that's pretty nice. Also, one degree Fahrenheit is supposed to be the smallest increment of temperature difference that can be physically detected by humans. Metric is quite sensible, but don't totally knock standard. It does have a few features.

Divide 1lb or 1pint by 10 and your stuffed! I like my freeze at 0 and my boil at 100.

You have a tank that is 2 1/2 yards long by 3.5 feet wide by 17 inches high. How much water does it hold? Filling the tank with water increases it's weight by?

I remember being told (in 1973), that going metric would destroy the economy, people wouldn't even be able to buy gas. My response, " 'Fill it' and 'Give me $5 worth', are exactly the same in standard and metric."

Using (sub)standard costs the US hundreds of billions of dollars in trade and contributes the bleeding of jobs offshore.
 
Easy easy! I did say a FEW features. Very few. :D Plus I live out here in Texas, and we like being able to quantify our misery in the summer. If it's 100ºF, you know it's bad. Somehow, saying it's 38ºC doesn't pack the same punch. Don't get me wrong; I love me some metric. If metric were a woman, I'd make it me wife! But I'd keep standard as a mistress.
 
Back to a recommendation.:) Grimmy how about adding Munich and some Crystal malt to your mash. It would benefit through increased flavor.

I'll for sure let you guys know how it goes and hopefully get some pics. Thanks for the tip Blender I was thinking of putting some Crystal Malt in the other day. I figure about 500 grams should do it (0.5kg/1.1lbs/17.6oz...that should cover just about everyone ,lol).

So what do you think about 500 grams munich and crystal? or should I add some more?

You almost never go wrong with crystal. Since you don't really have any specialty grains, I figure you're just going for a pale ale. Using Munich as well will be fine, I'm sure. Just depends, of course, on exactly what kind of body/color combination you're using. But there would be absolutely nothing wrong with using ~1lb of each. ;)

I would go with 250-350 grams of Crystal 20 or 40 and 500 grams of the Munich. It's good stuff.
 
Ya Ill try the 500g crystal malt and 500g munich malt with the minmash I'm going to do. Only thing Im really missing is a Candy thermometer and a wort chiller but I might just do that ice bath for the chiller
