navy taught me some helpful skills

My dad’s bluejackets manual was black ink only. Not nearly as dramatic. Question if you know you are going over board do you wet your pants before you take them off, or do you whizz on them afterwards? 😉

Boy Scout Lifesaving for me.
Same here. Spent two summers on staff at the Kansas City area Scout Camp in Osceola, MO, teaching water safety, life saving, life guarding, and swimming to non-swimmers. When I turned 18 I was finally old enough to certify as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, even though I’d been doing it for a few years.

Later, in the Navy, that experience proved useful, especially during flight school and water survival training.

Those lifesaving tips wouldn't work for me; A/ I could swim. B/ On the rare occasion I was on the water for something other than work, I'd be in my casual wear which requires a disclaimer: Years before fools started intentionally ripping thier jeans, I'd wear my jeans unitl there was only about 40% of them left...and I always began with perfect untorn jeans and they slowly got ripped up in the process of working or having extreme fun.... it became very annoying in the later 80's to have folk asking where I got my 'great jeans' or even offering to buy them.
