I'm going to be brewing an American brown ale soon and the recipe calls for Horizon as the bittering hops. I don't have any on hand, but I do have some Chinook. Can I use the Chinook as long as I account for the different AAs to get my IBUs? Or would it be better to just pick up some Horizon? I'd rather just use up my open package of Chinook.

A recipe is a record of how someone else made the beer. If you do substitute the Chinook hops you may get a little harsher bitterness due to the beta acid and cohumulone and it is possible that you might notice some of the citrus flavor. Being far from a LHBS I often substitute hops rather than waiting for the "right" hops to come in.
