I'm going to do a hop rod rye recipe this weekend. I'm a cheap bastage and have some wlp001 CA and english wlp002 slurry that I'm thinking of using instead of the WLP051 CA Ale V yeast I've seen others use. The V attenuation is a bit lower than the 001 as is the English yeast. Which would you use of the two I got (002 or 001, I'm leaning 002) or would you I be better served to buck up and buy the V

I just used the CA V yeast for the first time, so I can't really compare it to 001, but I would lean toward 001 instead of the english ale. My guess is that CA V is not as fruity as the 002 english. Better yet, split the wort in two and do both.

Use the 001 if you are going to use one of the ones you have. But for some reason, I have had much better luck with the V. I have no idea why, but it actually seems to be a bit drier in the end. That's just anecdotal. I have made it many times with the V and a few times with the 001. I really do like the V better.

Cheers :D

I'll use the V... next time. I looked at my recipe grain bill for the HRR and it was 15+lb; that's not going to cut it in my 5g cooler :(. I ended up getting my porter grain bill filled instead today. Lucky its fathers day coming up. I got some wish lists to send out, like that 10g gott I saw at the sporting goods store.

That ten gallon cooler is nice...I've done a 15, 16, and 20 lb. grain bill in mine and not been over 8 gallons in the cooler. The 5 gallon one should make an adequate HLT too. :)
