Hey all- first post here. Tried searching but maybe couldn't get the terms correct. I just finished a 1 gallon brew of IPA but it had a pretty aggressive initial ferment and it left quite a bit of hop matter and trub in the neck of the carboy. It's on day 3 now and has settled down a bit. You can see from the photo that there's space between the neck crap and krausen on top. Does any of it need to be removed or should I just let it remain in there? I'm worried some of the yeast is trapped in there.

Right on- thanks for the reply. I do have it covered up, just had the light on to check.

Yep, looks like all of my fermentations. In a couple weeks that crud will be hard to remove. I suggest you get some "Scent-Free" Oxiclean and TSP/90 and mix 1 tsp of TSP/90 with 2 tsp of Oxiclean and mix it in 1 gallon of warm water. Now fill carboy with this solution and let it sit for about 30 minutes. You'll be amazed at how clean the carboy will be. JMHO

Thanks for the heads up everyone, glad there's others that can relate. My concern now is how do I dry hop from here? Is it possible without moving to a secondary?

Take off the airlock and drop in the hop pellets. But don't forget to put the airlock back on. [emoji57]

Unless you are adding fruit or oak chips or any exotic ingredients (or if you are planning to do an extended aging), secondary is almost never needed.

Leave it. That's how mine looked. It comes off. I also removed my airlock a couple times. It was fine.
