Hey guys, I just got done doing a video on harvesting hops. It's about that time when there are plenty of questions going around on when to harvest hops. I hope I answered plenty of them. Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any other questions.

Loved the video, very nice. I want to see more like that. Those hops really looked different in length. Do they expand like that toward the end of growth, or were those different varieties (just ready and not ready)?

They were both cascade hops. One was fully mature and the other wasn't. If you have patience, then sometimes a hop will grow to be that long, most of the time, though, they average about 2 inches. You can see in my hands, when I grab the handful, that there are various sizes, but they can all be mature.

Glad you enjoyed the video.

Edit: At the very beginning of the video you'll see the hops in the background, one shot is cascades and the other is East Kent Goldings. Those are doing really well. Maybe I'll shoot another video when I harvest those!

ben, in your video you said that dogs can get benign hypothermia, i have heard this same thing but i think i saw it called malignant hypothermia. do you know what it is really called? thanks kevin

No, I'm pretty sure it was benign and not malignant. In either case, hops are poisonous to dogs, so keep them away. I'll do a little more research, though.

thanks for the video - i was about to go outside and harvest some of mine but now i know i should wait a bit longer.

best hop harvest info on the web imo. the first harvest i had when i smelled them recently smelled like tea leaves most likely chlorophyll is what it was that i smelled. the second harvest after watching this video my hops acutaly smell like hops! great video thanks

You're welcome guys. When I noticed that there really weren't any videos on the internet on how to harvest hops I figured I'd throw one up. I'm glad it's helping out. I think a lot of people harvest too young and don't give the hops an extra week or so to really mature.

Have fun harvesting everyone.

Well, just goes to show you your measly 9 posts is going to have to change, lol. Bring it dwarvenspirits, because I want some info, lol. I don't know if my friend saw your video or not, but he's growing indoors in a greenhouse and about to get a second crop. I'm gonna have to show him your video. Now, get to writing :)

I hear ya. I frequent another forum a lot. I'll be stopping by more often to offer my .03 cents. And you can always check out my other writings on my blog.

Actually it is malignant hypothermia. My wife is a vet. The main symptoms are increased heart rate as well as increased body temp. The fever can be bad enough to lead to brain damage and death. If you ever discovered your dog had eaten hops, put the dog in an cool water/ice bath to cool their temperature. Then call your emergency vet.

The video is awesome, btw.

Digging this one up....

Just found this video through youtube then on here.

Lead me to believe I may have picked my first handful a little too soon. They don't have the bounce back or the extreme paper sound. Plus they only smell a little bit...

Thank you.

Thanks again, guys. I hope the video helps. I have about a lb of cascade hops I need to harvest but I can't seem to find the time to harvest them! :(

dwarvenspirits- you mention the hops are three months old at the beginning of the video. Is the actual plant or the actual hops?

It's malignant hyperthermia. Hypothermia is having low body temp...not high. Yes, my wife is a vet too. I know this is an old post...just wanted it to be updated.

In the video you talk about drying the hops for several days. It seems like leaving them on the plant a little longer wouldn't hurt vs. harvesting too soon. Is there any issues with leaving them on the bine a little longer?
