homemade false bottom

I bought some perforated SS and had a friend cut out some circles for me the other day. This evening when I went out to take a look at them the have a layer of rust around the edges where they were cut. i haven't cleaned up the edges where there is some sort of build up (possibly slag) what can i do to get rid of the rust and make sure it doesn't come back?

i would try to smooth it out with a flap disc followed by some bkf and a green or white scotchbrite pad

You should use diluted nitric acid ( round 20% )to passivate the stainless

I would try cleaning the slag of with a grinder or dremel tool with a abrasive wheel strictly meant for stainless. Then make a paste with Barkeeper Friend and water and polish up the edge. There are some chemicals available on the market to bring back the original surface condition but they are not anything I would want to use on my rig. In the past I have welded stainless and cut it with a plasma cutter and not ever experienced this.
