When having to do multiple steps in Homebrew Dad's calculator, are those starter volumes the new TOTAL starter volume, after whatever addition - e.g., say step 1=500 ml and step 2=2.5L - do you put 2.5L as step 2, i.e., you now have a total of 2.5L on top of step 1's yeast, and that is what you put for step 2's starter volume; or do you put ONLY THE AMOUNT YOU ADDED, here, 2.0L wort?

Odd to compare calculator. Just playing with numbers. He's got 293 Billion at the end of step 1, and the other source has 100 Billion for the same wort addition!

Sorry for the all caps. I never do that but I guess I thought I wrote the query so poorly that the extra emphases would help, lol.

The starter volume for step 2 should be what you add. You can also decant some of the liquid from the first step before adding the second step wort if you want.

I have always just took the step volume as the new volume of fresh wort not the combined total volume. I don't decant just dump the previous step into the new volume so the yeast does not loose steam.

It appears the calculator assumes you are decanting the previous step as you can set your flask size to 2L and it will calculate a 1L step followed by a 1.5L step.

OK thanks, guys, clears it up perfectly. And ba-brewer, nice pickup on that note, too, thank you.

Cheers.
