I once made hobo wine from Welch's grape juice a long time ago. I'm think of trying it again.

What will happen if I filter the wine through a Brita water jug filter to get rid of the sediment?

Or should I just let the sediment settle and then siphon it into another bottle?

Combination of both?

What ABVs should I get with different yeasts? Pls suggest a yeast to try.

You don't need to filter it; all the sediment drops out pretty fast. I use Aldi's grape juice, and I find I get a better product if I mix a bottle of white grape juice (Niagara grapes) with a bottle of purple grape juice (Concord). Use just about any dried wine yeast, and add yeast nutrients, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per gallon of juice.

Do you have any gallon glass jugs? Apple juice used to come in them. (Carlo Rossi 4L wine jugs are good but take a different size stopper) Those make good fermenters. And you'll need an air lock on top.

It's been a couple of years since I've made any, so I don't remember how much sugar I added. I know I added some but not a whole lot. (I really should write this stuff down in a notebook)

The britta will remove way more than just the yeast. One of their early ads was using it to turn red wine into water.

It's crude hobo wine.

This is the recipe that's fermenting now:

-------------------------

96 oz family-size bottle of Welch's grape juice with no preservatives at room temperature. You'll make the wine in this bottle.

To make room in the bottle for ingredients, pour out 3 cups into a separate container for drinking as is.

Add 2½ cups sugar to bottle.

Shake it until all the sugar is dissolved.

Dissolve a packet of Lalvin EC-1118 (yeast) into some warm water (not hot). Stir and let sit for 10 minutes. Add it to 96 oz bottle. Shake until dissolved.

Open the cap just enough to let gasses escape.

Put in bucket or something to catch anything that foams over. Keep it in the dark.

Check it in 16 days.

-------------------------

It's in a spot that stays a consistent 67°F and it's bubbling nicely. Now in its 7th day.

I'm pretty sure this will have a high ABV. If it tastes like crap, what can I do with it?

Haven't been able to find the white grape juice w/o preservatives so far...couple more places to check. Gonna do up a batch using my fav D47 -- will up the SG using Welch's FGJC. [emoji111]

Here is my recipe for Welches purple:

1 gal Welch's(minus enough to add other ingredents)
2 can concentrate
red star white
SG BRIX 25.5/ aim 10 (14.4 abv)

when finished backsweeten with 1/2 cup concentrate

good after 6 months, VERY good after year+
