I spent all day converting a rotisserie motor into a HLT stirrer for the AG setup I'm putting together.

After putting it all together and giving it a test run, it looks like it might be going too slow to have much effect on distributing heat from the element but I can't check this until I get the element and thermostat hooked up.

I think it's turning in the order of about 2 RPM.

Is this too slow, or do other people have stirrers running at this sort of speed?
Is there any simple way of gearing things up to get more RPM?

Would hate to have to just get rid of it but there's not much point keeping it if it's not doing anything!

Is a stirrer really needed? It might speed the heat exchange up a bit I suppose but heat does an ok job of creating currents on it's own. I'm working on an eHLT and would like to know if I am missing something.

If you want it faster, you can add a belt and pulley system like some of he home made malt mill guys do. I can't imagine you'd need to stir very fast in a HLT, but I don't do electric so....

I use a 15.00 aquarium air bubbler attached to a long enough piece of stainless tubing to reach the bottom of my HLT to circulate it seems to work fine. My temp. increases are allot faster than with nothing in the HLT to keep the current moving around the coils.
